Review: Cube Snake for PC

For those of us lucky enough to have owned a Nokia phone in the ’90s, “Snake” brings back fond memories. This deceptively simple yet highly addictive game kept us entertained on our screens well before “smartphone” became a household term. The concept couldn’t be simpler: guide your ever-lengthening snake through various targets. Each time you snag one, your tail grows longer. The challenge? Avoid crashing into your own tail for as long as possible. It’s proof that sometimes the simplest ideas fuel the most addictive games. These nostalgia-inducing mechanics have inspired many versions over the years, and each time they do, I feel a nostalgic stir. This time around, Cube Snake on PC is bringing back those old-school vibes, and that’s exactly what we’re diving into today.

When it comes to diving into a new game, I often find myself pondering what exactly I seek in it. This is particularly relevant with a title like Cube Snake. Your enjoyment hinges on your expectations, so it’s essential to figure out what you’re hoping to get from the experience.

Cube Snake stays true to its roots. Your snake glides across the floor and two cube walls, gathering snacks along the way. The classic rules apply: earn points by gobbling up snacks until you inevitably crash into your tail. The catch? A fever mode. Once activated, multiple targets flood the screen, cranking up the tempo before returning to normal. It’s all about seeing how far you can stretch that tail.

The beauty of Cube Snake lies in its simplicity, just like its predecessor. It’s a quick five-minute distraction, perfect for breaks between tasks. The fast-paced, uncomplicated nature of the game beckons the “just one more” mentality. For those of us who relish a quick fix or chasing high scores, this is a gem.

In today’s gaming world, we’ve grown accustomed to wanting more – more levels, more unlockables. Cube Snake doesn’t quite hit this mark, and that’s where it may lose a few points for some players. If you’re the type who thrives on narrative, varied levels, or collectibles, this might not be enough to hold your interest. I’m one of those gamers who loves having extra goals. Perhaps a story, additional stages, or cosmetic unlocks could add a sense of progression to keep players invested.

That being said, Cube Snake isn’t a bad game by any stretch. It knows what it is and sticks with it. At the remarkably low price of £2.49, with a generous 10% introductory discount, complaints about value would be unwarranted.

Overall, Cube Snake delivers a mesmerizingly simple experience that’s perfect if you’re seeking an engaging way to pass the time. It’s a vibrant homage to the mobile classic, free of bugs and with intuitive controls. Anyone who appreciates straightforward games perfect for short bursts of play, or longer sessions if you get hooked, will appreciate this. For those nostalgic for the original, it’s a clear winner. All in all, it’s a well-executed piece that’s worth every penny for fans of the genre.

The Verdict: A classic reimagined, Cube Snake earns a solid 7/10. For lovers of nostalgia or simple score-chasing fun, it’s a hit. While it lacks some modern gaming additions, what’s offered here is a commendable version of a favorite that’s stood the test of time.
